The thriving enterprise Serres de la Vallée inc. is located in Rivière-Rouge in the Hautes-Laurentides. Since 2002, it has been operated by two partners in business (and in life) Mélanie Mailloux and David Jolicœur. Together, they produce herbs, medicinal plants and non-edible greenhouse plants, serving a regional clientele.

Their business got off the ground when they purchased a four-hectare field in 2002. Since then, investments have continued at a steady pace and the operation now counts over 1800 m2 of greenhouse production. Along with the construction of greenhouses, major investments were made to acquire equipment and install electronic temperature and moisture controls, state-of-the-art lighting, geothermic heating systems and CO2 additions.

Starting a greenhouse production is not without risk. Investments are high and securities barely cover financial needs. A partnership, joining strengths, resides in combining the expertise of representatives from financial institutions and those from La Financière agricole. Working together, they can assess risk and support projects that, based on a security analysis alone, might be more difficult to undertake. In addition, the loan guarantee mechanism offered by La Financière agricole to its partner financial institutions helps provide financing with preferential interest rates, regardless of the project risk.
